Although Sicily is a little quieter in winter than in summer, there are still plenty of activities for you to enjoy. Escape the cold and damp season in the north, soak up the sun and enjoy the mild spring temperatures that prevail in Sicily at this time of year. Here are some tips for excursions:
Taormina is also a popular destination in winter. Explore the ancient theater, stroll through the cozy alleys, the beautiful park-like garden near the Greek theater and enjoy the breathtaking view of Mount Etna and the deep blue sea while enjoying a delicious ice cream, e.g. our pistachio ice cream with pistachios from our region or enjoy an Aperol Spritz in one of the many cozy bars and enjoy La Dolce Vita.
Discover the delicious wines of the region, visit wineries and taste local varieties such as Nero d’Avola or Grillo. The landscapes you will see at wineries around Mount Etna are simply picturesque. We will be happy to advise you and give you tips on which wineries offer tastings and guided tours. We would also be happy to reserve these for you.
Sicily’s beaches also have their charm in winter. The sea can be used for swimming until November at a water temperature of 20 degrees. Or take a relaxing stroll along the beach and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. A picnic blanket, a good book, listening to the sound of the sea… who couldn’t relax and unwind?
Find out more about the region’s winter festivals and traditions, such as the Christmas markets or the celebrations in honor of Saint Lucia.
Our insider tip: At Christmas, there is a wonderful “presepe vivente” (living nativity scene) in a nearby village of Letojanni. This is said to be the most beautiful of its kind in all of Sicily. Here, around 250 villagers are dressed up in costumes and traditional costumes from the past and every inhabitant of every age group carries out an activity from the past.
You can experience at first hand how oil used to be pressed, how wheat was milled and so much more. The ground flour and olive oil are used to make sweet treats or bread at other “stations”, which are sold at the end of the event. There is no entrance fee and it operates on a donation basis only.
A unique event that attracts many visitors from far and wide.
Even in winter, you can take boat trips along the east coast of Sicily to discover hidden bays, picturesque fishing villages and natural sights.
If the weather permits, you can also visit the Aeolian Islands, such as the small island of Vulcano or Stromboli. The ferries depart from Milazzo, which is approx. 1:15 hours from our vacation homes.
For all nature lovers: watching the sunrise on Isola Bella while enjoying a fresh croissant with a delicious cappuccino is a wonderful natural spectacle. Listen to the special bird species singing and watch the colorful plants blooming all around you. There’s no better way to start the day. A little tip: don’t forget to take your sunglasses with you 😉.
